Frequently Asked Questions

I would like to watch an Aikido session before I train - is this possible?

Of course. We would highly recommend you watch a class before you decide to train to get a feel for the Dojo, it's members and the martial art.

I would like to train but I'm not sure what to wear...

Please wear loose fitting clothing such as old tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt. Eventually if you wish to continue to train you will need to purchase a training uniform known as a 'dogi' (pronounced 'dough gee').  These are relatively inexpensive (currently about £30) and are essential in order to progress with training.

How much is each lesson and is there an introductory course I can do?

The club charges a monthly membership rather than individual mat fees.  The membership fee’s for the club is extremely competitive and the details are as follows:

Regular Members

Monthly membership: £25.00 (payable by standing order or post-dated cheque’s).

Annual BAA insurance: £25.00 (£15.00 under 18s, unemployed and OAPs - this is compulsory and you cannot train in any martial art without valid PI insurance).

Is there an Introductory Aikido Class?

This is the perfect way to introduce people to the basic principles of Aikido.  These are held on regularly throughout the year, please contact us to find out when the next course starts.

Is there a Kids' Aikido Class?

There is now a kids' aikido class each Saturday. Monthly fees are £25.00 per child and ages from 5 years old and upwards are welcome. BAA insurance fee of £15.00 is payable per annum.  The class is a fun and relaxed introduction for children to Aikido and will help develop confidence and awareness.  For more information see the Contact Us page.

How long will it take me to get my black belt?

Meikyokai follows the grading syllabus of the British Aikido Association, tradtional section.  With diligent and constant training one can usually grade for their black belt within four to five years.
