About Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art and was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (who is commonly referred to as O Sensei meaning Great Teacher, pictured right) after many diligent years of research, practice and development.

Aikido primarily includes techniques for unarmed and armed attacks, and these techniques include numerous joint twisting and pinning techniques, as well as striking techniques.

These techniques have the power to injure or kill, but primarily their purpose is to control one or more opponents. The underlying principles of Aikido movements can be found within the Samurai weapon arts; the principles of swordsmanship are the fundamental contributor, emphasising eye contact, combat distance, timing and cutting methods.

The methods of Aikido training and spiritual teachings can vary from school to school.
