The Meikyokai Dojo emphasises power through relaxation and self-control. The common Western misconception is that you need to be bigger and stronger than your oponent, and to hit him harder with your fists in order to defeat him. This could not be further from the truth!
By overcoming the natural instinct to resist force, rather to learn to blend with it and redirect it, almost any person regardless of size or strength, can learn to use an attackers strength against them. It is a matter of biomechanics - there is no magic or mystical power involved.
It is important to understand that Aikido is not about fighting. At its very best Aikido is about control and the neutralising of aggression.
For this reason it is one of the hardest martial arts to master. However through diligent practice and proper application of the basic principles, students will find the rewards to be well worth the effort.
